Charity softball game pits FDNY against EMTs
FDNY firefighters and EMTs battled against each other in a charity softball game on Saturday for a good cause.
Before the game, two students were awarded scholarships in honor of Lenny Joyner, a former EMT who died in a hiking accident in 2010.
Organizers say it marked the fourth annual event celebrating Joyner's life, but the scholarship program is a new addition. They say the scholarship is a nod to Joyner's devotion to education and the job he dutifully held for nearly 10 years.
Israel Miranda, president of the EMT union, says the event is a fun way to remember and celebrate Joyner's life. He says the union plans to hold the event every year and hopes to offer more scholarships in the future.
The FDNY won the softball game 11-4.
