A church in Melrose is on its way to becoming a city landmark, but the biggest opposition is coming from members of its congregation.
The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission is hoping to grant landmark status to the Immaculate Conception Church in the Bronx.
However, churchgoers say bringing their prayer site to landmark status would make repairs and renovations a much harder process.
The pastor told News 12 he fears the status will create too much red tape for modern additions such as a handicap slope.
Members are signing a petition to keep the church, originally built in 1887, off the list.
However, some churchgoers say they are excited about possibly becoming a part of history.
