Two city officials are asking the Department of Transportation to temporarily suspend alternate side parking rules for one of the city's most affected areas amid the coronavirus outbreak.

With people under mandatory and self-quarantine in Riverdale, City Councilmember Andrew Cohen and state Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz say the last thing people need to be worrying about right now is getting a parking ticket.

They are asking the DOT to suspend alternate side parking rules in Community Board 8. "Being quarantined is hard enough," said Cohen.

"I mean, the city suspends alternate side parking all the time. If there's an inch of snow, they suspend alternate side parking," said Dinowitz.

In a statement to News 12, a City Hall spokesperson said in part, "Any New Yorker under self-isolation who provides medical documentation or testimony can have their ticket dismissed."

Cohen says that it is still placing a burden on people. "They have enough on their plate already. This is a little thing, that's within the city's control, that could make life a little easier," said Cohen.

While some people seem to agree, others say they are not on board. "I think it's not right. I think they should continue with alternate side parking. It's uncomfortable for me too, but it's good for the city," said a resident.

If you are under mandatory isolation, the city says you can get an order from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, which will be accepted as evidence when fighting a parking ticket.

They also say that if you are voluntarily quarantined, a call or text from your doctor will suffice.
