City starts free summer meals for kids
With classes out for summer, some underprivileged children may have limited access to meals that they would have received at school. But a program aims to assist.
The city's summer meals program is now available at hundreds of locations such as parks, community centers, New York City Housing Authority complexes and schools across the city.
The menu includes blueberry pancakes, cheese omelettes, roast beef, tacos and more.
The program is for children who are 18 years old and younger. No identification or registration is required to receive a meal.
Many of the sites serve breakfast from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. A food truck will be serving food at Orchard Beach from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the weekdays.
And for the first time, parents and students can now download a mobile app from the Department of Education to find sites near them. That information is also available online and by calling 311.
The program runs from June 27 through Sept. 4.
