The city's new school chancellor visited schools throughout the Bronx Monday.
Richard Carranza met with pre-K students at the Concourse Village Elementary School before traveling to other institutions, including James Monroe Campus, where he threw out the first pitch of Monday’s baseball game.
Carranza says that he spent his first week diving into policy issues and talking to education officials.
As a former teacher and principal, Carranza was the Houston School Superintendent before taking over Carmen Farina’s post.
"I also think it's really important having come from a very humble background myself to have that diversity of experience as well, because that's kind of what makes a public school system -- a public school system," he said.
Carranza says that he will spend a full day in each borough this week. He will be heading to Brooklyn on Tuesday.
