Coldest temperatures since 1994 to freeze city through weekend
Some of the coldest weather in years will freeze the city through Sunday morning.
According to News 12 Meteorologist Mike Rizzo, the last time the city saw high temperatures colder than 15 degrees was nearly 8,752 days ago on January 19, 1994. The high temperature on that day was 10 degrees.
This unprecedented cold makes for extremely dangerous and brutal conditions outdoors. Feel like temperatures will be below zero, nearing 10 to 20 degrees below. Actual temperatures will be in the single digits or lower teens.
Therefore, a wind chill advisory is in effect for the city through Saturday. Alerts are only issued when feel like values will be as low as 15 to 20 degrees below zero. Frostbite can form within 30 minutes on exposed skin in these conditions, the National Weather Service warns.
Today’s wind will be westerly with gusts up to 40 mph through the morning. On average, the gusts will be between 20 to 30 mph for the afternoon and evening. Gusty conditions persist through Saturday, too.
There is hope, though, as warmer and more seasonable temperatures are on the horizon for next week. The extreme cold weather pattern is forecast to break for now. Normal high temperatures should be near 38.
