Communities mark 1 year since Eric Garner death
Communities across New York City are marking the one year anniversary of Eric Garner's death with vigils and rallies.
Garner, 43, of Staten Island, was being taken into custody for allegedly selling loose, untaxed cigarettes when Officer Daniel Panteleo placed him in an apparent chokehold. The incident was caught on a cellphone camera.
Garner died a short time later after saying "I can't breathe."
In Concorse Village, mourners marked the occasion with 11 seconds of silence, representing how many times Garner said he could not breathe.
More events are planned to honor Garner's memory over the weekend.
