The Weeksville Heritage Center has been saved after the community raised the funds together.
The center turned to the community for help, creating a Crowdrise site.
It had hoped to raise $200,000, and officials say they surpassed that goal in just a matter of days, showing just how much the center means to the community.

The community gathered again Thursday, this time rallying to ensure what happened doesn’t happen again.
The museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the 19th century African community of Weeksville.

“They're pushing to put in place [to] ensure Weeksville long-term sustainability inclusion into the cultural institutions group. This would allow them to get consistent funding,” says Rob Fields, president of the Weeksville Heritage Center.
"The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs remains committed to providing substantial, ongoing support for Weeksville Heritage Center’s administration and maintenance needs, as it has for many years," city officials said in a statement. "It’s essential that we preserve the legacy of this historic black community and keep its story alive, and we’re working closely with the organization to put it on stable footing."
