Community members came together Wednesday evening to remember a construction worker who was crushed to death on the job when a building partially collapsed.
Segundo Huerta died Tuesday in the accident. He leaves behind five children.
The 46-year-old Ecuadorian immigrant came to the United States 15 years ago in search for a better life, his family says.
Huerta was doing construction on a build on East 208th Street. Inspectors from the Department of Buildings determined that the third floor was overloaded with masonry blocks, which caused it to collapse on the workers below.
Five other people were injured, including Huerta's cousin and his nephew Giovanni -- who is in bad shape with back and leg injuries, according to his family.
A vigil was held Wednesday a block away from where the family lives in Soundview.
"He was a good man. What can I say about him? He was a good man, he was a family man, he was a good son to my mother," said his brother Eduardo Huerta.
A family friend told News 12 Segundo Huerta's mother was in the United States visiting from Ecuador when this happened. His mother and nephew both had to be taken away by paramedics at the vigil.
The Department of Buildings is calling this a preventable tragedy and is promising to bring enforcement actions to those responsible.
News 12's calls to Pioneer General Construction, the company contracted for the job, has not returned News 12's calls.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration started an investigation Wednesday.
