New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer is calling on the city to do better for those living in public housing.
Stringer released an audit Friday that he says proves the city's housing authority has wasted millions of taxpayer dollars.
After inspecting 35 roofs in 13 different NYCHA developments, Stringer says auditors found deficiencies on more than half of them, indicating inadequate maintenance and repairs.
The audits found 88% of replacement roofs sampled were sagging, pooling water or had cracked surfaces. In one instance, it says NYCHA wasted $3.7 million by replacing eight roofs while they were under warranty.
In a statement, a NYCHA spokesperson told News 12, "The comptroller's audit and recommendations are consistent with what the authority has been aware of and addressing through a new system we are already implementing."
