Concerns mount over temporary City Island bridge
Questions are being raised about the engineering of the temporary City Island bridge.
City Island Civic Association president Barbara Dolensek says there is worry when it comes to the safety of the bridge.
"Most of the concern is going to be the way cars handle the angles, bumper-to-bumper traffic coming on the island and off the island," she says. "Then there is an emergency; how is the fire truck going to get down the middle lane?"
The bridge has been officially operational for the last three weeks. Community board 10 district manager Ken Kearns tried to help ease the concerns of natives Bronx residents who had fears after a partial collapse of the structure back in September.
"The bridge is in good shape," he said. "The temporary bridge is a sound structure."
Kearns says it's important to focus on the future.
"They're going to get a new bridge. They are going to get the bridge they wanted," he says. "It's going to be a good fit for the island."
