Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that protects LGBTQ rights into law Friday.
The Gender Non-Discrimination Act prevents people from being discriminated against based on general identity and sexual orientation.
At a conference Friday, Cuomo proclaimed the bill as a catalyst for change in society.
"The Supreme Court says you can discriminate against transgender in the military. That's what they said last week. We say today—no you can't. You cannot discriminate against people by gender identity, period," says Cuomo.
The new bill also bans conversion therapy.
