The city's Department of Environmental Protection is investing $22 million to reduce pollution in Westchester Creek by upgrading the sewer system.
Officials say they are installing new sewers and upgrading outdated ones in ParkChester in order to prevent runoff from traveling into the creek.
The plan is to divert runoff to the Hunts Point water treatment plant in order to reduce pollution.
Officials say the action will reduce pollution in the creek by 64 percent.
Work is expected to start over the next few weeks.
The DEP says sewer renovations will not only help improve water quality in the Westchester Creek but the Hudson and Bronx rivers as well.
