The city Department of Buildings says the owners of a controversial new development at 3250 Westchester Ave. have filed for a permit to build a high-rise, mixed-use building there.
Neighbors say there's too much congestion in the area to support it. About 200 of them signed a petition to block the building.
"People already have a hard time finding parking spaces when they come at nighttime," says John Cerini, the community leader who started the petition.
Still, some residents have come out in support of the development.
"I think it's going to be great for the neighborhood," says Darren Fusco. "More medical for everybody."
As previously reported by the Bronx Times, the site is currently home to the Pelham Bay Professional Center -- which consists of two separate structures and houses, retail space and medical offices. Developers Rester USA and the Marcal Group want to expand to a 10-story office building, giving space to retail and commercial offices on the first two floors and leasing the rest to medical tenants.
"We will attract many quality medical practices that will likely bring good employment opportunities to the neighborhood," the Marcal Group told News 12.
