The family of Frank Gifford says the legendary NFL player and sportscaster developed a brain disease linked to injuries he sustained during his playing career.
Pathologists say Gifford suffered from a degenerative brain disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.
The find comes as existing NFL concussion protocols continue to come under scrutiny.
The NFL stated that its new concussion standards to protect players failed, and the league will now consider whether to discipline teams found violating protocol.
The football great played 12 seasons in the National Football League before becoming a studio broadaster.
For 27 years, audiences watched Gifford on "Monday Night Football." Off the field, he was married to TV personality Kathie Lee.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement saying that the health and safety of players is the highest priority, but that there is more work to do.
