The city's Department of Transportation says it is rolling out several changes to help improve safety for drivers and pedestrians on Boston Road.

The DOT says the work is set to be complete this spring, and that it's working on improving one last chunk of Boston Road from Astor Avenue to Pelham Parkway North.

The department says some of the changes include improved accessibility, an increase in pedestrian visibility, calmer traffic and a restriction on some left turns.

The DOT says it started work on Boston Road at Waring Avenue last year with the goal of improving the corridor all the way to Pelham Parkway North, an area that is central to transit, schools, parks, retail and housing.

The department says it focused on two priority intersections - Boston Road at Thwaites Place and Boston Road at Pelham Parkway.

The DOT says from 2010 to 2014, there were a total of 237 injuries and one death on Boston Road from Waring Avenue to Pelham Parkway North. The department says it tackled the issues with a plan to implement new crossings, reduce speeding and calming traffic, shorten pedestrain crossings, clarify traffic movements and bus stop locations.

The DOT says it's working on finalizing improvements, which include installing curb extensions and finishing up roadway markings.
