The Department of Transportation says it has completed adding additional safety features to a Kingsbridge intersection as part of the city's Vision Zero initiative.
Plans to extend sidewalk space at Broadway and W. 231st Street started in 2015 in hope of bringing some relief to an area that's otherwise deplorable for New Yorkers who walk and bike, the DOT says.
Just beneath the elevated 1 train was an overcrowded street lined with cars. Today, the gap has been filled between the curb and the pedestrian island, extending from the old curb line to the 1 train station.
Gwen Bonaparte, a Bronx commuter of 36 years, says she is relieved the city has finally extended the sidewalk.
Bonaparte says the Kingsbridge corner was chaotic.
"I have known people who were hit by cars at this intersection and further down from here," she says.
The DOT says the new space is roughly two car widths wide and four car lengths long.
It is hoping the new extension will cut down on pedestrian fatalities and increase safety measures.
