Drivers blame milled road after toddler dies in crash

Some Bronx drivers are saying the milled, coarse roadway of Bruckner Boulevard may be in part to blame for a crash that killed a 3-year-old.
"Being under here is like a death threat," said one driver. "It's really scary and frightening. Even the overhead is raggedy and needs fixing."
News 12 observed drivers swerving to dodge the raised metal sewer caps and avoid coarse spots.
Investigators say Saturday's crash happened around 10 a.m. when the driver of a Chevy Malibu slowed down to avoid going over a raised manhole on the road that the city's Department of Transportation is in the process of repaving. The city's Department of Transportation told News 12 that the first step in road pavement is to mill, or rip out, existing roadway.
When the driver of the Chevy Malibu slowed down, the driver of a Mack garbage truck barreled into the back of the car, totaling the vehicle.
Police say there were four family members in the totaled car. The only one who did not survive was 3-year-old Sophia Aguirre, of Williamsburg.
The driver of the garbage truck remained at the scene, and News 12 is told no charges have been filed.
