Experts say it's a good sign that whales have been spotted in Long Island Sound near Edgewater Park in the Bronx.
Howard Rosenbaum, director of the Wildlife Conservation Society's Ocean Giants program, says the whales are likely following the fish they eat closer to the shore.
He says thanks to new anti-pollution laws, the Long Island Sound has become much cleaner over the years and that this is the second year in a row humpback whales have been spotted in the Bronx.
"This could become more of a regular event as prey continue to be abundant and available for these animals," Rosenbaum says.
Just this week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries advised boaters in New York and Connecticut to be on the lookout for humpback whales in Long Island Sound.
Earlier this week, a humpback whale was spotted near New Rochelle and another sighting was reported near the coastline in Norwalk, Connecticut.
Rosenbaum says that if you spot a humpback whale, you should not approach it in a boat and keep the engine in neutral while around them.
