Two families participated in the first internal kidney swap at Montefiore Medical Center.
The children of Pauline Powell and Edmonia Garrett wanted to donate their kidneys to their respective mothers, but they did not match.
Brandon Garrett, 23, donated his kidney to Powell. In exchange, Brandon's mom received a kidney from Powell's daughter, Sedicah.
News 12 the Bronx is told that the mothers' overall health has improved since the transplant.
Both mothers will go back to the hospital for post-operative checkups.
