A Canarsie family says no one notified them that their school bus stop was discontinued.
The say the only notification they received was the same day that the bus didn't show up.
Ebony Benton took her 6-year-old daughter Saniya Miller to her usual bus stop where 20 other kids were waiting. Thinking the bus might be late, Benton took her daughter to school herself and then headed to work.
"The school calls us and tells us we have to come pick her up," says Pia Horton, the girl's grandmother. "They sent her home with a note and a MetroCard."
Saniya took the bus last year without any issues.
P.S. 114 Ryder Elementary offers a later bus, which means Saniya would miss school breakfast and that her mother would be late for work. The other alternative offered by the school is letting Saniya walk.
"I don't feel comfortable (with) her walking because when I was 6 years old, I wasn't walking to school by myself," Benton says.
The school is exactly 1 mile from where the family lives. According to the city Department of Education website, first-grade students who fall within that distance are eligible for transportation.
News 12 reached out to both the DOE and bus company, Jofaz Transportation, but did not immediately hear back from either.
