The family of a young boy killed by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus in the Bronx last weekend is planning to sue the agency for millions.
Sanford Rubenstein says they're suing for $10 million in damages for the wrongful death of 7-year-old Shavone Bethea Jr.
Police say Bethea Jr. was riding his motor scooter down East 184th Street and into moving traffic on Webster Avenue when the bus struck him. They say the impact happened at the midsection of the bus.
Police say the bus driver had the green light and remained on scene after the collision. Rubenstein, however, says the bus driver was negligent, making the MTA liable for the child's death. The boy's older brother and father were reportedly right behind him when the incident happened.
The family is suing for an additional $5.5 million for the emotional distress they say the victim's brother experienced.
The MTA declined to comment on pending litigation.
