Family of teen fatally stabbed in classroom prepares for trial
The mother of the teen fatally stabbed in his classroom is preparing for the moments she's anxiously awaited for years -- the beginning of the trial Thursday.
Matthew McCree was stabbed to death in his history class at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation in September 2017. Now two years since the teen's death, new video which may contain a recorded confession could be brought to the table once the trial begins.
"There's no way to prepare for it, it's been two years and I've been waiting, so the anxiousness everything is still the same," says Louna Dennis, McCree's mother.
Abel Cedeno, now almost 20 years old, is accused of fatally stabbing McCree with a switchblade, hurting another classmate as well.
Meanwhile, Cedeno's mother has said that her son was a victim in the case too, as she says he was defending himself from bullies who repeatedly threatened and assaulted him.
About a week ago, a judge heard arguments on whether or not a 90-minute police interview with Cedeno, taken hours after the stabbing might be allowed into evidence.
The McCree's family lawyer has said he expects the other teen who was hurt to testify in front of the judge.
Now charged with manslaughter and assault, if Cedeno is found guilty, he'd have to serve each charge separately, which could mean 50 years behind bars.
