EBT cardholders will no longer be able to purchase groceries at farm stands or farmers markets by the end of August.
One farm stand on Southern Boulevard is part of the Food Access Program, through which people can get a whole bag a fresh vegetables for $10. Those who use EBT pay $8, but that might soon come to an end.
The program director says the federal government has no plans of renewing an expiring contract with Novo Dia, the company that makes the technology allowing EBT to be accepted at places like farmers markets nationwide.
The farm stand's food box program is curated to a specific recipe, and a nutritionist cooks the recipe on site and provides samples to taste.
The contract was originally going to expire at the end of July but was extended a month. What helped extend the program was the nonprofit National Association of Farmers Market Nutrition Programs, which used its own funds to pay Novo Dia.
