A Canadian father says the man killed after brandishing a fake gun at police during a welfare check in Eastchester Wednesday night was his son, a foreign exchange student from Jamaica. 

As News 12 has reported, police shot and killed a 31-year-old man in a Pratt Avenue apartment after they say he threatened them with a knife and an imitation pistol.

Belvett Richards says that man was his son, Miguel Richards.

Speaking over the phone from his home in Canada, the elder Richards told News 12 that his son moved to New York from their native Jamaica two years ago as part of a student exchange program.

When police entered the apartment, they say Richards had the knife in one hand and the other hand hidden behind his back. He later raised that arm, revealing what appeared to be a gun. One officer discharged a stun gun, but two others shot him with their pistols, police say.

Body cameras from multiple officers recorded the incident, police say, although the video has not yet been released.

"He was murdered cold-bloodedly," Richards said. "He did not deserve to die this way." 

None of the officers were hurt.

Police Commissioner James O'Neill is reviewing the bodycam footage and will decide whether or not to release it to the public after meeting with Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.
