FDNY: 1 seriously hurt in 2-alarm fire in Morrisania
Officials say a two-alarm fire broke out at a Morrisania apartment building early Sunday morning.
The FDNY says the fire broke out at around 5:20 a.m. at a four-story brownstone on Forest Avenue. News 12 is told the fire started on the first floor and traveled to the higher floors.
Officials say one person was hospitalized with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Neighbors say the fire spread could be seen throughout the building.
"The whole hallway was illuminated with the flames," said Adrian Baird.
The fire did not travel to Baird's home, but he says his family still fled the building. His sister then ran back inside to bring their pet birds outside safely.
The Red Cross is helping one family with temporary housing and emergency financial assistance.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
