The FDNY is saying goodbye to one of their own today - Firefighter Phillip Mazzella who died on July 24.
Mazzella’s funeral was held at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea in the Bronx where he also went to school.
He had a long career in the FDNY, including being one of the first responders in the Set. 11, 2001 attacks.
Mazzella’s loved ones say he suffered from symptoms found among many 9/11 first responders and spent years burying colleagues who struggled with the same conditions.
At just 55 years old, they say Mazzella’s passing was sudden. He is remembered for his outgoing personality and infectious laugh.
Mazzella leaves behind two sons.
