FEMA relief en route to Brookfield

<p>Federal help is on the way to Brookfield, months after severe storms blasted the town and uprooted trees and power lines, Gov. Dannel Malloy announced this week.</p>

Federal help is on the way to Brookfield, months after severe storms blasted the town and uprooted trees and power lines, Gov. Dannel Malloy announced this week.
On May 15, severe weather and tornadoes swept through parts of New Haven, Fairfield and Litchfield counties. The winds whipped Brookfield the hardest.
At one point, obstructions blocked every road in town, and power outages affected all residents, according to First Selectman Stephen Dunn.
It cost the town $1.7 million just to clear the roads, Dunn says.
"Getting the FEMA aid means we'll be able to replenish our general fund and hopefully go around and do another cleanup," he says.
The funds are restricted to only public assistance. Town officials say they're hoping to get additional money for residential cleanup.
Officials say they estimated spending about $4.6 million to clean up the mess. But the town's insurance company covered only about $800,000.
