At least 50,000 New Yorkers have taken advantage of a free financial counseling program provided by the city over the past 10 years.

The Department of Consumer Affair's says it's thanks to their Financial Empowerment Centers located around the city.

They say New Yorkers first set up an appointment with a finance counselor who creates a plan to help them set up payment plans for bills, tackle debt and even budget everyday expenses.

Organizers say it's part of an effort to help New Yorkers better manage their money.

Germaine Ruiz, a client of the program says it was easy to set up a meeting with a finical counsel.

"It was very easy to make, like you didn't have to make a phone call, I wasn't put on hold. I did everything on my phone, I got a quick appointment, it was in my community," Ruiz says.

Perquida Williams, a financial advisor say's thousands have benefited from the program.

"That's what we're here for. To assist and to help people and when we get results, that just makes us look that much better that we're doing a good job," Williams says.
