Fire prevents reopening of Pelham Bay restaurant
A restaurant in Pelham Bay that was set to reopen today after months of extensive repairs, will remain closed after a fire damaged the restaurant along with two other businesses.
Officials say the owners of Texas Chicken and Burgers on Westchester Avenue were trying to light the stove when they experienced a problem with the gas, causing an explosion and fire.
The restaurant has been closed since June following a car crash. Police say 7-year-old Ethan Villavicencio was eating inside the restaurant, at the time known as Kennedy's Chicken and Sandwiches, when a car backed up into the restaurant. Villavicencio was pinned against the wall and died.
Two firefighters suffered from minor injuries in Wednesday's fire, but are expected to be OK. It is unknown exactly when the restaurant will be able to reopen.
