A fire ripped through a commercial strip in the Wakefield section of the Bronx this morning – leaving several firefighters with minor injuries and some businesses destroyed.

Fire officials say the flames the broke out in a plumbing store around 7 a.m. at 987 E. 233rd St. have been extinguished.

They say the flames quickly spread to neighboring businesses and into the apartment building directly behind the stores.

The fire chief at the scene said four firefighters suffered minor injuries. Responders were still spraying down the stores to ensure the flames don’t rekindle.

According to the Department of Buildings preliminary report, the fire left “extensive damage” to the commercial building businesses. Damage was also found at 4013 Gunther Ave. – a two-family home.

The Red Cross is providing relocation assistance to any residents in need.

East 233rd Street between Paulding Avenue and Edenwald Avenue is closed until further notice.

It was not immediately clear how the fire began.
