Former Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray is on the ticket once again, but this time she's running for town clerk.
For years, Murray won election after election in the Town of Hempstead. First as town clerk, and then repeatedly as the supervisor of America's largest township. The Republican is a household name in Hempstead and has never lost a townwide race.
But four years ago, Murray ran for Nassau district attorney and lost. She has not run for office since. Many voted against Murray because they blamed her for the New York Islanders' decision to leave the Town of Hempstead and Nassau County for Brooklyn.
Now that Murray's on the ballot once again, some Isles fans are vowing to vote against her again.
One fan tweeted: "Islanders fans...time to get to the voting booth again...#goawaykate."
But Murray says she's not concerned about any potential backlash.
"Time moves on, the Islanders are doing great, they are playing a good number of games in the Coliseum," Murray says. "I always wanted that."
Political analyst Jerry Kremer says Murray figures to boost the Republican ticket because of her name recognition and prior electoral success in the town. As for angry Islander fans, Kremer says they likely don't factor in much, since the team might be playing hockey on Long Island again.
Democrats have blasted Murray's decision to run. Nassau Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs releasing a statement saying in part: "The voters see through Republican Kate Murray's candidacy and assuredly will chose to re-elect Sylvia Cabana as Town Clerk in November."
