Foundation honors firefighter killed in home explosion
The Stephen Siller Tunnels to Towers Foundation honored the late Michael Fahy with a fundraising campaign at his former firehouse Thursday, but his wife made a surprising announcement at the event.
The fundraiser was spearheaded by Mrs. Siller, whose husband died on 9/11.
FDNY Deputy Chief Fahy died in a home explosion in Kingsbridge last week.
The fundraiser was organized with the intentions of collecting donations to pay off the late firefighter's home mortgage. However, at the event, Fahy's wife announced she did not wish for the money to be used for their home's mortgage, instead, she said the funds would be used for the foundation's main purpose, to help find homes for wounded veterans.
Fahy's wife spoke before supporters at the fundraiser, saying how her and her late husband had watched a documentary about Stephen Siller just days before Fahy was killed.
Investigators determined the explosion that killed the deputy chief was caused by a tampered gas line inside a home being used as a large scale marijuana grow operation. Two men were arrested and are facing multiple charges.
Fahy was fatally struck in the head with debris from the explosion and laid to rest last week.
On Wednesday night, his children were honored by throwing out the first pitch at the NL Wild Card game where the New York Mets faced off against the San Francisco Giants.
