Free Legionnaires' exams offered in Morris Park
Free Legionnaires' disease screenings are now available in Morris Park.
The ProHealth Urgent Care in the heart of Morris Park is screening senior citizens and the uninsured after the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene announced that legionella bacteria were found in some cooling towers in Morris Park, including at hospital cooling towers.
"A place like this is away from the hospital, so people feel a little bit safer coming to a place like this," said urgent care patient Al D'Angelo.
The health check, which takes about 20 minutes, includes an oral and ear exam, respiratory exam and chest X-ray.
"You can come in and be evaluated for pneumonia. Our doors are open," said ProHealth Dr. Robert Miller. "You can come in and have a physical examination."
Local elected officials had called for the exams after 13 cases were identified in Morris Park since Sept. 21. Of those cases, one person has died and eight are still hospitalized. Officials attended a town hall meeting Thursday where they tried to put people at ease over the new cases.
The urgent care is conducting health screenings through Oct. 11.
