Several Bronx residents spent their Sunday cleaning up the area along Pelham Parkway.
The local group, Friends of Pelham Parkway, is working to bring some beauty back to their borough.
"Actions speak louder than words," says Roxanne Delgado. "And I think that us, as normal residents of the neighborhood, we can lead by example.”
Members of the group say that littering, dumping, illegal barbecuing in the summer and dog waste are major problems that bring down the area.
They say they just want to give the community something it can appreciate, but they can't do it alone. Some members are calling on the Parks Department to provide funding and machinery. They also are asking for local officials' help in cleaning up the borough's parks.
While sprucing up the area is important, that is not the only aspect Friends of Pelham Parkway wants to bring to people in the Bronx.
"Our mission is not to be cleanup crews," Delgado says. "But also plant seeds of compassion for our planet, for all living being and our people."
