Future of abandoned railway uncertain
It's been decades since any trains ran on the 30-block stretch of rail between Melrose and Mott Haven, and now community leaders want to convert the space into something useful.
The tracks are mostly underground, but Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. says the above-ground portion, which until recently was known better as a homeless encampment, should become a park.
Some residents, however, say they'd like the MTA to reactivate the line to Queens and Brooklyn.
Diaz says that while reactivating rail service would be convenient, converting the land into a green space could save billions of dollars and decades of work.
