Several local leaders may be donning their brightest purples today in an effort to help raise awareness about domestic violence.

As part of "Go Purple Day," City Council members are handing out leaflets throughout the five boroughs, which highlight a number of services available to help victims of abuse. Included on the fliers is the New York City Family Justice Center on 161st Street.

It's all part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October. The Empire State Building will even be lit purple, the color of domestic violence awareness.

According to a report from the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence, the Bronx has the second highest number of family-related homicides in New York City, with 25 percent of all reported cases happening in the borough.
