Bus drivers from Greater Bridgeport Transit held a protest Wednesday to demand hazard pay and more PPE to protect them during the coronavirus pandemic.
Mustafa Salahuddin, of LOCAL 1336, says every time you hear the hydraulic hiss of a bus coming to a stop, that's potentially COVID-19.
"We are demanding now that we get hazard pay. We are demanding now barriers be put in every single bus," Salahuddin says.
The protesters also say that there are not adequate safety barriers in place on all the buses, and workman's compensation claims are not being honored for drivers who get COVID-19.
The head of GBT, Doug Holcomb, says the organization has actually earned a B+ from Amalgamated Transit Union who represents the drivers for its response to the public health crisis.
A document released by GBT shows The Amalgamated Transit Union requests and what GBT has done in response.
Union officials tell News 12 that so far, one driver has contracted the virus.
The head of GBT says the company has not laid off any employees, and has worked to keep everyone on.
