The village of Hempstead hosted their annual Margin Luther King Jr. Day parade as well as a special ceremony at the Bethlehem of Judea Church Monday.
The event hit its 30-year milestone and is Long Island's oldest annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade.
Local students and bands, performers and members of the Hempstead ROTC marched from Kennedy Park down Greenwich Street to the church parking lot to pay tribute and honor Dr. King.
The community also honored Hazel Dukes, a civil rights icon, leader in the NAACP and a Long Island native.
Dr. Dukes was awarded with Hempstead's Lifetime Achievement Award for her work as a longtime leader in the NAACP and her constant pursuit of equality. Dukes lives in Roslyn where she'll soon have a street named after her.
