A person is dead after a late Friday night house fire on Sarvis Lane in the Cronomer Valley section of the Town of Newburgh.
Cronomer Valley Fire Chief Robert Dorrmann said the call for a serious fire came at around 11:45 p.m. and brought in resources from five different departments.
Firefighters said they arrived to heavy flames that had already consumed half of the house.
It's also when they realized a person was inside.
"We never got a report that anybody was trapped. However, there was a car in the driveway and the door was locked, so obviously the house had to be searched," Dorrmann said. "Once we got a line in place, they were able to push back the fire enough to make the rear bedroom, where they found the victim."
Fire officials said they got the victim out of the house within minutes.
He was brought to the hospital where he later died.
The man's identity had not been released as of Saturday evening.
Neighbors said they've known him for 20 years and are shocked about his tragic death.
Fire officials and investigators spent Saturday combing through the house to try and piece together what happened.
While Chief Dorrmann said that the kitchen may have been where the flames started, the exact cause was not immediately known.
