For some students at Hostos Community College, spring means rolling up their sleeves and growing organic, all thanks to one professor.
Dr. Elyse Zucker not only teaches English, but she is also a passionate agriculturalist and environmentalist. She combined those interests to launch a food program called the Hostos Green Market.
The goal is to empower students in areas where whole and organic foods are not readily available. The green market is just one of a handful of service learning courses available at the college.
Zucker says it teaches students about farmer's markets and what they provide for the community, as well as why it's important to be engaged in the agricultural process and be active consumers.
The class will host a soup and chili event on April 30.
