'Housing is a right': 80 families fight to prevent eviction ordered by judge
Tenants of Prospect Lefferts Gardens say they're going to fight to prevent their eviction ordered by a judge last week.
The Flatbush Tenant Coalition says families were placed in several buildings owned by Barry Hers, the landlord, by the city when they were homeless.
A judge ruled last week that Hers does not have to provide leases to around 80 families living there.
Families say that they lived in moldy apartments with leaks and bed bugs.
The coalition says that after the city stopped paying the shelter subsidy, the families started paying their own rent and wanted a lease from Hers.
Tenants say they plan to appeal the decision and are asking Mayor Bill de Blasio to step in and intervene so they don't have to go through the trauma of being homeless and evicted right before the holidays.
A spokesperson from the mayor's officer says it's important to note these buildings are not currently buildings used as shelters and have not been for two years. They also say the mayor will not leave the families stranded and they will pay for lawyers to represent the tenants in housing court.
Hers would not comment on the story.
