City officials have announced a plan to expand social-emotional learning and restorative justice across all city schools.
The plan is an effort to change the current school climate by allowing students to express their emotions and overcome conflicts.

It’s an initiative that officials say has been proven to improve students’ academic performance by making communication and problem solving a priority.
"We couldn't go to the next level without really doubling down on social-emotional learning. That was a piece that was missing, and it's missing, honestly, pretty much all over the United States of America, and we have an opportunity to get it right in the nation's largest city," says Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The Department of Education also announced an effort to limit the arrests of students in school for low-level offenses.

The initiative will cut back on student suspensions so that students will have more time to learn in the classroom.

The entire school climate package is expected to be implemented over the next three years, with schools receiving services on a rolling basis.
