Dozens of city EMTs and paramedics gathered in court Friday to support the family of Yadira Arroyo, the EMT who police say was run down by a suspect who carjacked her ambulance last year.
Police say Jose Gonzalez ran Arroyo over with the ambulance in March of last year. He was due in court Friday in the case.
Last week, a court-appointed psychologist found Gonzalez unfit to stand trial. But the prosecution is now requesting its own psychologist to evaluate Gonzalez.
Arroyo's family members say they won't accept anything less than prison for Gonzalez, saying that he took away a mother from her five children.
Union officials say there are assaults on EMTs one to two times a day in the city. They also say that this unfortunate case highlights the dangers EMTs and paramedics face on a daily basis.
A judge is expected to decide whether Gonzalez is fit to stand trial on May 7.
