Mayor Bill de Blasio and Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman announced a plan to reduce the inmate population at Rikers Island last week.

It's called Justice Reboot - an initiative to modernize the criminal justice system by attempting to reduce the backlog of court cases.

Administrative judge Robert Torres says the Bronx has been trying to expedite cases since 2013. In that year, they cut the backlog of pending felony cases by more than half thanks to extra judges. The backlog is still more than 450 cases, Torres says.

As part of the initiative, pretrial inmates with pending cases of more than 1 ½ years will have a court day within 45 days.
