Kids celebrate success in Bronx summer learning program
United Way of New York City wrapped up its annual summer learning program in the Bronx Friday.
The 'Once Upon a Summer' program offers children from the Mott Haven area reading comprehension sessions with a teacher and trained staff, as well as one-on-one tutoring with high school students. Individualized literacy training is offered through a web-based program called iRead.
Children put on a performance for their parents and educators at P.S. 154 on East 135th Street to commemorate their success.
Organizers say the program is in its third year and has shown amazing results.
Over the last six weeks, 150 students from six schools across Mott Haven took part in the program, reading over 1,200 books.
Organizers say in order for children to become successful students, they must be ready to read at grade level by the fourth-grade.
However, only one out of every 10 children in the Bronx are able to read at their grade level.
