Family members in West Islip are remembering the hero football coach who died shielding students from bullets during this week’s school shooting in Florida.
Assistant football coach and security guard Aaron Feis sacrificed his own life protecting students during the shooting.
Feis lived in West Islip with his family for nearly 10 years before moving to Florida when he was 12 years old. His grandfather spoke to News 12 about the tragic loss but wasn’t surprised Feis rushed to help and described his grandson as a hero.
“He ran in right to protect the kids and when the shooter was aiming at a kid he threw himself in front,” said his grandfather, Raymond Feis. “He’s not the only hero, there were many heroes in the school.”
Aaron Feis leaves behind a wife and an 8-year-old daughter. His grandparents will depart Long Island tomorrow for Aaron Feis’ funeral.
Feis isn't the only Long Island connection to the tragedy in Florida.
Scott Beigel, another teacher who died saving students in the Florida shooting, also grew up on Long Island. Beigel, 35, grew up on Hart Place in Dix Hills. He was shot and killed while trying to lock a classroom door to shied students.
Today was the funeral for 18-year-old Meadow Pollack. She was one of the 14 students killed in the massacre. Her father, Andrew, grew up on Long Island and graduated from Oceanside High School. Richard Ramos grew up with Pollack’s father in Oceanside and is heartbroken his friend lost his only daughter.
“A parent isn't supposed to lose a child,” says Ramos.
Jaime Guttenberg will be laid to rest in Florida Sunday. The 14-year-old's father is an East Northport native. Her family, from Long Island as well, is already in Parkland for the services.
