Local leaders are unveiling a new pilot program in response to a video that went viral last month.
A scary brawl between police and youth in Downtown Brooklyn was captured on video. Now, a new program is empowering students and teaching them what to do if they are approached by police.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and city Department of Education Chancellor Richard Carranza are working with educators and advocates on the "Know Your Rights" peer-to-peer pilot programs.
They say it will train public school students to lead interactive workshops for their peers- teaching them what to do in various scenarios when stopped by law enforcement.
Many students say they were scared when they saw the viral video and they look forward to learning how they can protect themselves in the future.
The pilot program will be administered by the Brooklyn-based nonprofit Community Counseling and Meditation. It will be modeled in part after similar successful youth engagement program.
