Efrain Guzman, who is accused of taking a police officer's pistol and fatally shooting a deli clerk, returned to court Thursday.
Guzman faces charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter in connection with the incident, which left Wali Camara dead. Since the incident, the NYPD has replaced officers' holsters with new ones that have an automatic locking system.
Camara's relatives say they hope Guzman ends up with the maximum sentence of life in prison.
They have also filed a multimillion-dollar wrongful death lawsuit against the city and NYPD.
Guzman will return to court on Aug. 25.
