Mario Ocasio family asks DA to probe stun gun death
Family members of a man who died after an encounter with police met with the Bronx district attorney Wednesday and say they walked away unsatisfied.
Mario Ocasio, 51, died last week after a police encounter in University Heights during which an officer used a stun gun to subdue him while he was allegedly lunging with scissors.
Police say five officers asked Ocasio repeatedly to drop the scissors.
Emergency responders injected Ocasio with drugs designed to reverse the effects of heroin, but he later died at the hospital.
Ocasio's family claims NYPD officers used excessive force against Ocasio after he was laying on the floor, but investigators say he resisted arrest. The family asked the DA for an investigation into the case.
The family and their lawyer allege that the entire incident was recorded on a cellphone camera that was confiscated and erased by police.
The city's Medical Examiner's Office says that the cause and manner of death are still under investigation.
Family members tell News 12 The Bronx that an independent medical examination will be performed Thursday.
